Getting Around:

Citymapper

The ultimate urban transport app — this app will help you navigate the city in no time. This app allows you to: Check nearby departures in real-time, find the fastest route combining bus, subway, train, ferry, taxi, car share, bike share and walk, follow step by step directions, including the best subway exit to reach the platform, and receive alerts when your favourite lines are disrupted. Whether you have been in the city for one day, or several months, this app is helpful because it gives you up to date information on exactly which route you should be taking! Best of all, the app allows you to download routes for use when no wifi is available.

Moovit (very similar to citymapper)

Moovit guides you from point A to B in the easiest and most efficient way.Get train and bus times, maps, and real-time arrival times with ease so you can plan your trip with confidence. Find critical alerts and service disruptions for your favourite lines. Get step-by-step directions of optimal route bus, train, metro, bike or a combination of them. Ride with Moovit in all major cities: Sydney & NSW; Melbourne & VIC; Brisbane & South East QLD; Perth;  Adelaide; Canberra and many more…

Uber

Regardless of where you are travelling, Uber is an app that you must have downloaded on your phone. Uber is a great option for getting around Australia. Whether you are going to dinner a few blocks away, or taking a day trip to the beach, Uber allows you to skip the long tram travel times and ride in comfort. Personally, I like to compare the tram times with Uber before deciding how to commute around Melbourne. Often, I have found that splitting an Uber with one other person is cheaper and quicker than taking the tram.

Saving Money:

Tourpay

Did you realise that you can get money back on purchases that you have made in Australia? International travellers have the chance to get their GST tax (10%) refunded from certain purchases at the airport at the end of their trip. Use Tourpay to help you generate the materials you need for GST refunds in our partner stores, from easily paying your local currency, to managing tax refund invoices and consolidating invoices to maximise your GST refund benefits. If you plan to shop at all while in Australia, it is worth it to download this app and save!

Bring Me Home

Bring Me Home makes surplus food accessible and affordable for everyone. The app lets one buy and pick up discounted surplus food from nearby food retailers at a specified time. This app is great for those who are travelling on a budget. With prices from $5-$8, you are guaranteed a bargain and you are helping the environment! All one has to do is pay for the food through the app and then show their receipt to the restaurant in order to collect the food.

Culture Trip: For Curious Travelers

Living like a local is always the best way to experience a new city. With Culture Trip, advice from locals is easier than ever to obtain. Culture Trip makes travel planning easy and fun, covering the world with award-winning travel stories and videos, insider guides to vibrant cities, trusted recommendations for unique things to do and handpicked places to stay in the coolest neighbourhoods. Through the app, you can collect ideas and create a personalized wishlist. Best of all, the app allows user to browse articles offline. Culture trip understands that seeing the best spots can require going beyond the reach of WiFi.

WeFi – Free wifi finder

Thankfully, many of the large Australian cities have free wifi that covers a majority of the city. However, sometimes you find yourself out of reach of wifi and needing to look up information. Instead of randomly walking into cafes and asking if they have wifi, check on the app and know for sure! While most of the cafes provide their customers with wifi information, I have purchased a coffee for the sake of wifi to then discover that it isn’t available. Lesson learned: it is always better to check before!
